Planning a Lawn Renovation?
Here’s Every Machine You’ll Actually Need
From clearing stumps and waste to reviving tired turf and keeping it looking sharp, here’s the full range of gear for a lawn reno — stage by stage.
A proper lawn renovation is rarely a one-machine job. Between clearing what’s there, preparing the ground, reviving the turf, and hauling away everything you remove along the way, most renos go through several distinct stages — and each one has a machine that makes it dramatically faster than doing it by hand.
Stage 1: Clearing the Site
Before you can renovate anything, you often need to clear what’s already there. If a tree has come down or out and left a stump behind, a stump grinder is the fastest way to deal with it properly — chewing it down below ground level so new turf or garden beds can go straight over the top.
If you’re clearing overgrown shrubs, hedges or general green waste, a wood chipper turns branches and prunings into manageable mulch rather than a mountain for the tip run. Got larger logs or timber from a tree removal? A log splitter takes the manual labour — and the risk — out of breaking it down into firewood-sized pieces.
Stage 2: Moving Material Around Site
Once you’re clearing, levelling or shifting bulk material — soil, mulch, turf, pavers, sleepers — a Kanga mini loader earns its keep fast. We run two sizes: the Kanga Kid at 800mm wide for tight side access and narrow gates, and the 1000mm Kanga for bigger jobs that need more power and productivity.
- Forks for pallets and sleepers
- 4-in-1 bucket for digging and loading
- Trencher for irrigation lines
- Auger for post holes
Got material to move around a tight or spacious site? A Kanga mini loader cuts out the manual wheelbarrowing.

Every lawn reno generates waste — old turf, soil, green waste, broken concrete, whatever’s come out of the ground. Rather than making trip after trip in the back of a ute, a tipper trailer lets you load up, cart it away, and tip it straight out without shovelling it back off again by hand.
It’s one of the most underrated parts of a reno job. The digging and clearing often isn’t the slow part — it’s the constant back-and-forth hauling material away that eats the day. A tipper trailer collapses that into far fewer trips, and because it tips, unloading takes seconds instead of a sore back.
Stage 4: Reviving the Soil Underneath
If your existing lawn is salvageable and you’re renovating rather than starting completely from scratch, the next stage is getting the soil underneath back into a condition where grass can thrive. An aerator/corer pulls small plugs of soil out of the lawn, relieving compaction and creating space for water, air and nutrients to reach the root zone.
A scarifier or dethatcher clears out the layer of dead grass, roots and organic debris sitting between the soil and the green growth above it. Dethatching pulls this layer out gently; scarifying goes a step further, cutting into the surface more aggressively to deal with moss and heavy matting — a common step before overseeding.
Lawn salvageable but looking tired? Aeration and dethatching together are often the biggest improvement you can make.

Once the lawn is prepped, turfed or seeded, and established, keeping a bigger property looking sharp is its own ongoing job. A ride-on zero turn mower makes light work of mowing that would otherwise eat hours with a push mower, with the zero-turn design allowing tight manoeuvring around garden beds, trees and obstacles without the three-point turns a standard ride-on needs.
| Where You’re At | Best Equipment |
|---|---|
| Removing a stump or clearing green waste | Stump grinder, wood chipper, log splitter |
| Moving soil, turf or materials around site | Kanga mini loader (Kid or 1000mm) |
| Hauling waste off site | Tipper trailer |
| Reviving an existing but tired lawn | Aerator/corer, scarifier/dethatcher |
| Ongoing mowing on a larger property | Ride-on zero turn mower |
Matching the Machine to Your Stage
Not every lawn reno needs every machine — it depends entirely on where your project is at. Most people booking a lawn reno end up hiring a combination of two or three machines across the course of the project, rather than all of them at once, and that’s exactly how we’d recommend approaching it: tackle each stage with the right gear rather than trying to force one machine to do everything.
Why Hire Rather Than Buy
For most homeowners and even a lot of tradies, these aren’t machines you’d use often enough to justify owning outright — a stump grinder, log splitter or aerator might only come out once or twice a year. Hiring means you get the right machine for exactly the stage you’re at, without the cost, storage and maintenance of owning gear that sits idle most of the year.
Tell us what stage your reno is at and we’ll help you put together the right combination. We service the Gold Coast, Brisbane, Logan and Ipswich area, with delivery available from our Stapylton depot, or pickup if that suits your schedule better.
